Remember these pool safety tips for this summer.
Backyard pools have been a favorite add-on for decades and they are still just as popular as ever. If you’re going to be a swimming pool owner, then water safety must always be top of mind. To get you started, we’ve put together some simple pool safety tips that you should follow this summer and beyond.
Install a Strong Fence
Make sure you’ve installed a strong fence around the perimeter of the pool. This will help prevent kids from easily gaining access when adults aren’t around. Also, the door leading to the pool needs to be self-closing and self-latching so that it never stays open.
Teach Kids How to Swim
Unfortunately, accidents happen every year because children who don’t know how to swim are allowed in or near the pool. If you aren’t confident in your swimming lesson capabilities, consider getting your child professional instruction. You can find swimming instructors online or simply visit your local YMCA or other youth centers for a reputable swimming instructor.
Never Leave Kids Alone Around a Swimming Pool
Every parent knows that kids can get into stuff when you turn your back for just a moment. If you’re the only adult present and you need to leave the pool area, make sure that the kids are outside the fence. They may be a little annoyed, but that beats any alternative.
Become Certified in CPR
One of the best pool safety tips is to learn CPR and get certified. CPR is a crucial skill to have if there is an accident. Plus, it’s just a good skill to have out in the rest of the world. If you have any difficulty finding CPR classes, reach out to the American Red Cross for assistance.
Avoid the Drain Covers
As a kid, you probably swam down to a drain cover and put your hand over it to feel the suction. Unfortunately, long hair, clothing, and other items can get sucked in and prevent a child from getting back to the surface. While this may be a very rare occurrence, it’s always a good idea to tell your children to avoid the drain covers.
No Running on the Deck
Not running on the deck or the pool area in general seems like a no-brainer, but accidents happen every year. The sides of the pool can get especially slippery, so this is a rule that must always be enforced. We’d also suggest you install non-porous pavers in the deck because they don’t hold moisture and are slip-resistant.
Routinely Clean the Pool
Letting debris float around the pool is a surefire way to get a child sick. The same goes with neglecting to shock the pool or add algaecide as needed. Simple maintenance will go a long way. If you don’t have time to do it yourself, hire a weekly swimming pool cleaning crew to do the job for you to help prevent health issues for anyone who takes a dip. This is less of a concern with salt-water swimming pools.
Pick Up Safety Equipment
There are several kinds of pool safety equipment that you should keep on hand. Having a telescopic pole around can even allow kids to get other kids out of the pool, and having a lifesaver nearby won’t hurt, either. You also have your choice of advanced pool alarms to choose from, which will alert you to the gate being opened or someone falling into the pool.
