Keep leaves out of your pool!
Whether you’re considering the installation of a brand new swimming pool or have been a proud owner for many years, you’re most likely aware that keeping a pool clean takes plenty of time and effort. After all, it doesn’t take a great deal of neglect before leaves and debris begin collecting inside the pool, which makes it unsightly and troublesome.
It’s very common in Florida for swimming pool owners to have a leaf problem as the year goes on and weather changes occur, so you’re definitely not alone. To help you out a bit, we’ve put together a quick list of tips on how to keep leaves out of your pool through simple prevention and removal efforts.
Screen Enclosures
Screen enclosures for your swimming pool will prevent leaves, insects, lizards, and other unwanted debris out of your pool. There are a variety of pool-screen options for you to choose from, including:
- Fiberglass Mesh
- Vinyl Laminated
- Solid Pool Covers
- and more!
Check the Pool Weekly
The most effective way to learn how to keep leaves out of your pool is to simply be diligent about it. Checking the pool once a week and removing any leaves that have gotten through your defenses (which we’ll get into below) will keep everything looking nice and clean. This is especially important during the fall season when you may experience dozens of leaves that come from your backyard trees or get blown onto your property.
Install Leaf Fencing
A great line of defense against leaves is the installation of fencing or a wall that encircles your pool and keeps debris at bay. This could be wooden fencing, retaining walls, or even a series of hedges. If you already have a fence around the pool and don’t want to replace it, you can use privacy fencing sheets in areas where leaves are able to pass through.
Robotic Pool Skimmer
Even if you’ve never owned a pool before, you’ve probably been to a friend’s house and watched them remove leaves from the pool by using a long net. While this tool is effective, improvements in technology have certainly come a long way.
A robotic pool skimmer uses internal sensors to clean the pool much like a robotic vacuum cleaner. Keep in mind that these can be very costly – typically starting at around $500 and as high as $1,000 – but they’ll definitely save you a lot of time because all you have to do is set its schedule and let it do the work.
Smart Landscaping
Giving your landscaping a once-over and making some changes can go a long way to keeping leaves out of your pool. Many homeowners choose tropical trees and plants that have huge leaves, because it’s a lot easier to clean up a few large leaves rather than dozens of smaller ones. It’s also a good idea not to choose plants that flower or produce fruit, because those will increase the chance of leaves and other debris.
Maintain Your Lawn
If you allow your lawn to get out of control, then you’ll almost certainly have a big problem with leaves getting into the pool. Getting your trees trimmed at least once every few years will reduce the amount of leaves, which will help keep both your yard and pool clean. Also, remember to always use a bag when you mow the lawn so that grass and other debris isn’t stirred up and lands in your pool.
